Abstract :

To evaluate bone mineral density among patients with IBD, to determine and correlate the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis by measuring BMD in IBD patients with severity of disease with modifiable risk factors. The present study is carried out in the Department of Gastroenterology, Gandhi Medical College / Hospital, Hyderabad, from November 2017 to October 2019. In the present study, it was observed that 40% patients were in the age group of 20-29 years. The age range of subjects in the study was between 18 years to 59 years. The mean age of the study population was 31.48 ± 8.73 years. Continuous variables were expressed as mean ± SD values, categorical variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages. Statistical test such as unpaired t-test was used to evaluate mean differences between groups for continuous variables and Fisher test/Chi square test was used to assess association between categorical variables. Probability value (p value) was used to determine the level of significance. p value < 0.05 was considered as significant and p value < 0.01 was considered as highly significant. BMD in patients with recently diagnosed IBD was not significantly decreased compared with population controls. Subsequent development of osteoporosis in patients with IBD seems to be a phenomenon related to the disease process and the treatment modalities of IBD.
