MYOCARDIAL BRIDGES - A STUDY ON HUMAN CADAVERIC HEARTS

Abstract :

 Back ground of study: Coronary arteries affected by the intramural tunneling carry a major role in the incidence of coronary artery disease and subsequent risky surgical intervention.Understanding the prevalence of  myocardial idges is of enormous help to the cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to reduce the complications  in various interventional procedures.Materials & methods: A   dissection study was carried out in fifty human hearts after removing the pericardium and subepicardial fat. Each coronary artery was traced from its origin to termination to detect the sites of myocardial idges. Results:Myocardial idging was detected in 23 % specimens of male sex and 19 %  specimens of female sex. Left anterior descending artery was the main vessel affected by this. Summary–Though there is no gender based prevalence for the myocardial idges, the middle segment of left anterior descending artery is the main site of coronary artery overidging. A sound  knowledge about this very important to prevent the risk of perforation during surgical correction of myocardial ischemia which are refractory to medical management.
