PEASANT AGITATIONS IN INDIA BEFORE INDEPENDENCE

Abstract :

 Historically the peasant movements in India can oadly be grouped in three distinct phases. The initial phase (1857- 1921). This phase was characterized by the sporadic growth of peasant movements in the absence of proper leadership, the second phase (1923-1946). This phase was marked by the emergence of the class conscious peasant organizations. Its distinct feature was that during this period peasant movements were led by people who gave priority to agrarian problems in the struggle for national liberation. The third phase was post-Independence phase. This era witnessed the uninterrupted continuity of the agrarian movements due to the failure of the ruling classes to resolve any of the basic problems of the toiling masses in rural India. The main aim of this article is to analyze the major reasons for the peasant revolts during colonial rule
