Abstract :

AIMS: To analyse the performance of HbA1c in diagnosis of undiagnosed Diabetes mellitus Type 2, based on fasting plasma glucose and/or 2–hr plasma glucose (PP2BS). METHODS: It was carried out on 100 high risk patients for Diabetes mellitus type 2 meeting inclusion criteria of study. Conventional diagnostic tests of fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dl and / or 2–h plasma glucose PP2BS ≥200mg/dl were considered to be the reference standard for diagnosis of diabetes in this study. RESULTS: Against FBS and PP2BS as reference test, the sensitivity and specificity of HbA1C ≥6.5% for diagnosis of diabetes were 46.42% and 97.73%, respectively. CONCLUSION: HbA1c Cut–off value of 6.5% showed limited sensitivity to diagnosis of diabetes, although with high specificity. HbA1c ≥6.5% misses a substantial number of people with type 2 diabetes.
