STUDY ON FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY IN DIAGNOSIS OF SALIVARY GLAND LESIONS: A HOSPITAL BASED STUDY

Dr. C V Manohar Reddy

Abstract :

A lump in the salivary gland region often presents as a diagnostic challenge with regards to its site of origin, benign or malignant. Most of these occur in the parotid glands; small percentages occur in the submandibular, sublingual,

and minor salivary glands. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the spectrum of salivary gland lesions in our setting and to assess the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC for salivary gland lesions. In the present study, non-neoplastic lesions accounted for 21.5%, followed by 69.2% benign tumours and 9.2% malignant tumours.  FNAC of the salivary gland is simple, cheap, safe and reliable technique in the primary diagnosis of salivary gland lesions.
