Abstract :

Suturing is defined as the joining of incised tissues with needle and thread so that the tissues bind together and heal. The thread used in suturing is a specialized suture material.5 It is the surgical act that allows to approximate the wound edges, keeping them united until the healing process confers the intrinsic force sufficient to maintain itself. It is used to reattach the incised tissue, to control bleeding, and to allow for healing by primary intention. A wide variety of material is available for suturing incised tissues. Also, paramount to clinical success is a thorough understanding of the various techniques of surgery, suturing, and the materials currently available to ensure the desired clinical results. This article is an attempt to discuss the suture materials and suturing techniques to help the clinician obtain optimal wound closure and thereby optimal healing.
