Abstract :

Teaching is a highly professional activity which demands specialized knowledge, skill and behavior. It has been observed that there is shortage of trained teachers in the field of environmental education. Therefore, training of prospective teachers in concerned field is the urgency of the nation. In India, environmental education has been introduced at school levels. But the teaching of this subject is not satisfactory due to lack of proper training of teachers in the field of environmental education. Beå this fact in mind an attempt has been made through this paper to make training programmes of prospective teachers in effective manner. National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has organized national level workshops on environmental education for teacher educators in different states. Realizing the importance of education as a potential instrument of social change, the Government of India through its National Policy on Education (1986) has made environmental education a part of the general education at all levels, in particular at the school level. The significance and urgency of creating environmental awareness in school children has also been upheld by the Honorable Supreme Court of India through its directives to the central and state educational authorities to make environmental education compulsory at the school and college levels. It is, however, well realized that the key to successful implementation of environmental education is the teacher. Therefore, classroom teacher should be well equipped with all the skills that required for effective implementation of environmental education plans. It is true to say that teacher’s training colleges are facing various challenges due to which several important aspects remain ignored. Lack of resources, funding and lack of coordination of efforts are the main challenges that teacher training institutions are facing. This article highlights the selected aims and suggestions for effective training of teachers so that they can produce environmentally literate school students.
