Abstract :

This study was designed to extract and estimate the amount of alkaloids and total phenolics as well as their

antibacterial and antioxidant potential in ethyl aceate, acetone, methanol and ethanol with the roots of Derris trifoliata L (DL). The antibacterial activity was done by agar well diffusion method alongside Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris,, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis and
Lactobacillus delueckii. The inhibitory effect of the crude extracts was compared with standard antibiotics gentamicin,
tetracycline and ciprofloxacin. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration [MIC] was determined by serial dilution method and
the antioxidant activity is done by ABTS method. The ethanol fraction is showing high amount of alkaloid, where as the
total phenolics is rich in methanol. However, the efficacy of the inhibitory effect is high for acetone and ethanol extracts.
The MIC value was found to be between 1.25 to 5mg/100µl. This study provides the necessary information for extraction
and characterization of bioactive principles that enjoy the antioxidant and antibacterial action in root extracts of DL
