Abstract :

Purpose: To study the various ocular injuries, clinical features and visual outcome in paediatric age group. Materials & Methods: In this study total 50 patients with penetrating injury (up to 15 Years) were screened. The age and sex of the patient, history, general, systemic and ophthalmological examination was done. Time, object and circumstances of the injuries were noted. Slit lamp examination, fundus examination, vision, Routine examination and radiological examination were done. Results: Highest incidence 48% of penetrating injury was seen in age group of 6–10 years. Incidence of injury was higher in males 74% as compared to female. Children at play or sports were victims of penetrating injury in 40% of the cases. Domestic injuries 32% and agricultural injuries 24% were other major injuries. The maximum number of patients had corneal tear size of 4–6mm. 62%patients had iris prolapse and scleral tear seen in 24% of patients. Vitreous hemorrhage was observed in 10% of total patients. Retinal detachment, traumatic endophthalmitis and retinal tear observed in each 2 patients. 6 patients were developing phthisis. In 2 patient’s enucleation was done. Conclusion: Common object causing injuries were stick 34%, wooden arrow 30%, thorn 18% and metal wire 10%. Injuries restricted to anterior segment formed majority of penetrating injuries. Maximum corneal injuries 76% of these 60% were limited to cornea and 16 % were cornea–scleral. The site and size has got direct relation with visual outcome. The tears of larger size and placed to affect center of cornea have poor visual results.
