Abstract :

Aim: The aim this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of buccal fat pad (BFP) and nasolabial flap for reconstruction after release of fious bands in patients with oral submucous fiosis (OSMF). Study Design: This prospective and comparative study was carried out in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, AIIMS PATNA BIHAR. Material and Methods: This was a comparative study wherein a total of 20 patients (14 Male and 6 Female) aged between 18 to 62 years were randomly divided into two groups (group 1 and group 2). In group 1 patients, reconstruction was planned with buccal fat pad and in group 2 patients, reconstruction was planned with extended nasolabial flaps respectively. Results: In both groups there was significant improvement in the mean mouth opening. In group 1 patients it was 40.3 mm and 39.7 mm, compared to 37.90 mm and 37.10 mm in group 2 patients at the end of 6 months and 1 year respectively. The intra and post–operative complications were found to be more in group 2 patients when compared to group 1. Conclusion–In the present study, buccal fat pad graft proved to give better results in comparison to nasolabial flap for surgical management in oral submucous fiosis patients.
