Abstract :

<p> Eco–tourism is the combination of two basic concepts namely Ecology and Tourism. Integration of these concepts is a unique idea to conserve the environment and development of tourism. This helps to protect the local ecology on the one hand and it promote revenue collection, employment and infrastructural development on the other. Today, eco–tourism is attracting global attention for conservation of natural and cultural resources and development of tourism. Eco–tourism tries to develop and manage the tourism with concern of environment, development, employment, income, education, awareness, regional natural and cultural resources as well as local community. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) report, 2013, tourism is the world’s largest industry and the turnover was $358.9 billion. According to WTTC Eco–tourism is the fastest growing industry. UNO celeated the year 2002 as a Ecotourism year, Which makes it popular in the world. The government of India has also made policy for tourism development which helps it to grow faster. The growth rate of Indian tourism industry was 7.3% in 2014. The total foreign exchange earned from this industry was 1100 billion rupees in 2013. The arrival of foreign tourist was 7.36 million in 2012 and it is estimated that it will reach 13.43 million by 2024. The Himalayan state, Uttarakhand is famous for its natural beauty and panorama in the world. This region is attracting the tourists for a long time from the different part of India and world. Most of the tourists are pilgrimage oriented though, natural beauty, biodiversity and healthy climate is a main attraction. It helps in peoples well being and economy of the region stronger. The western part of this region is drained by the river Yamuna, a main tributary Ganges. The region is full of Snow–Leopard, Tiger, Musk Deer, Bharal, Himalayan Thar, Leopard, Cat, Bear, Kakhar etc. wild life, birds are –Monal Pheasant, Cocklance Pheasant, Kaleese, Chakore, Golden Eagle, Mountain Clave etc. are the main attraction. The National Parks, Sanctuaries, Deer Parks, Wetland conservation and forests of this region are the addition to its beauty. Yamunotri glacier, Banderpunch, Shrikanth etc. peaks, Harkidun, Kedarkantha, Kanasar etc. alpine pasture meadows (Bugyals), Sarutal, Saptrishikund, suryakund etc. lake (Tal), and Nagribba, Magra, Kempty, Dhanolty Eco–Park, Tigerfall etc. are the main tourists attraction of this area. River rafting facilities are also available in the river Yamuna and Tons. These all characteristics makes a strong background for the development of Eco–tourism in the region. This paper is a geographical study of development and potential of Eco–tourism in Yamuna basin of Garhwal Himalaya region.</p>
