Human immunodeficiency virus infection & Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused byinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). People with advanced HIV infection arevulnerable to infections called ‘opportunistic infections’ like tuberculosis, bacterial pneumonias, herpes zoster, staphylococcal skin infections and septicaemia. Pneumocystitis jeroveci pneumonia, toxoplasmosis & cryptococcosis can also develop. GunturDistrict in Andhra Pradesh had the highest number of HIV positive cases since 2012-13.

Because of its prevalence in this part of country, the incidence of HIV & the consequent opportunis ticinfections, a detailed study of HIV related diseases in this area was undertaken. Thestudy may help to draw plans in reducing the mortality & morbidity in HIV patients.
