 BACKGROUND: Falls are a common and serious problem for older adults. Falls cause significant reduction in the quality of life of elderly. The major cause of fracture in elderly people is fall. Objectives: The objective of this study is to identify risk factors of fall related fractures in the elderly population. Methods:  this cross sectional study was conducted in S.D.M College of physiotherapy Dharwad. A total of 94 elderly patients who had sustained fractures due to fall were included in the study based on the inclusion criteria. the elderly patients were interviewed for The Peninsula Health – Fall Risk Assessment Tool questionnaire. Results: In our study the incidence of fracture due to fall for those in age group 60 – 69 year, 70 – 79 years and 80+years were found to be 36.17%, 44.68% and 19.15% respectively. . Most of the fracture occurred in females (63.83%) than males (36.17%). hip fracture were most common fractures in all three age groups with total of 77(81.91) fractures in 94 . results showed that advancing age, medicine, psychological behavior, low vision, nutrition, incontinence, and unsafe footwear were the Significant risk factors of fracture due to fall. Under the circumstances of fall Slip (68.09%), trip (9.57%) and loss of balance (9.57%) were found to be the most common circumstances of fall in elderly people.Conclusion: Our study found out that advancing age, medicine, psychological behavior, low vision, nutrition, incontinence, and unsafe footwear were the major risk factors of fractures due to fall in the elderly people. Slip, trip and loss of balance were the most common circumstances of fall. Hip fractures were found to be the most common fractures in elderly after fall.
