Background

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare, lethal type of thyroid cancer. The paucity of data has eluded the formation of standardised treatment protocols. A multi–modality approach is adopted and for patients desiring aggressive treatment, radical surgery along with chemoradiation is advocated. Patients with metastatic ATC are encouraged to participate in clinical trials as no definitive treatment is available.

Case Summary

We present a case of an elderly patient who presented in an advanced stage of ATC with distant metastasis. The patient received the entire gamut of treatment available and responded well. The patient was decannulated and no longer PEG–tube dependent.

Conclusion

Though treatment for ATC remains an enigma but the novel treatments offers a ray of hope in this disease with historically miserable prognosis.
