IJSR International Journal of Scientific Research 2277 - 8179 Indian Society for Health and Advanced Research ijsr-8-1-17763 Original Research Paper RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM CALCIUM LEVELS AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE: A CLINICO-BIOCHEMICAL STUDY Sejal A. Mehta Dr. Dr. Rahul N. Shah Dr. January 2019 8 1 01 02 ABSTRACT

 Aim:

The aim of this study is to observe co–relation between serum calcium levels and Periodontal diseases.

Material & Method:

The present study was conducted to determine the serum calcium levels, hence knowing its effect on the periodontium in College Of Dental Sciences And Research Centre, Ahmedabad. Thirty patients, both female and male were included in the study.  The study was conducted among 15 periodontitis patients and 15 control patients with healthy periodontium. Blood samples will be collected and Serum calcium levels will be estimated in patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy periodontium.

Results:

The mean serum calcium level observed significantly higher in patients with periodontitis compared to patients with healthy periodontium.

Conclusion:

A decreased intake of calcium has adverse effects on the oral cavity leading to periodontitis. Hence, Serum calcium may be considered a risk factor for periodontal disease. Further studies will be needed to better define the role of calcium in periodontal disease and to determine the extent to which calcium supplementation will modulate periodontal disease and tooth loss
