Background– Diseases of the appendix dates back from the beginning of the human civilization. It was first recognized as the “Perityphlitis” in the late 1500s . With the recent advancement of minimal access surgery the group of surgeons practicising laparoscopic appendicectomy advocates that the panoramic view of the entire abdominal cavity is far more valuable that the advantages of open appendicectomy. Material & methods:– The study conducted on 50 patients selected from the Department of General Surgery, RIMS, Ranchi in the period of May 2017 to June 2019 with the clinical features of appendicitis . For the purpose of study these patients were divided into two groups in a random way. Results– Laparoscopic appendicectomy has the advantage to directly visualize the entire peritoneal cavity and can deal with other associated pathologies. Besides good cosmesis it has the disadvantage of being expensive and having increased operating time. Complicated cases may have to be converted to open procedure. Conclusions– open appendicectomy is safe, cost effective and remains the procedure of choice in our set up..
