Shared decision–making is a core value in patient–centered care and is becoming a universal practice in clinical medicine. A potential challenge, however, is to integrate the practice of shared decision–making into the routine practice of physicians. This descriptive cross–sectional study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of shared decision–making among physicians working in primary health care settings in Dammam city of Saudi Arabia. Of the total sample of 136 physicians, 76.5% knew the definition of shared decision–making, while only 35.3% were trained in it. Importantly, 48.5% felt strongly that the clinical situation and cultural differences posed as major challenges. The relationship between socio–demographic characteristics and knowledge, attitude, and practice of shared decision–making was found to be statistically non–significant. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that it is important that physicians’ knowledge, attitude, and practice of shared decision–making be enhanced.
