Microbial quality of two edible marine fishes: Euthynnus affinis and Katswonus pelamis collected from landing centre and two different local markets were carried out using standard methods. The total bacterial count ranged from 3.0 × 105 cfu/g to 3.6 × 105 cfu/g and 2.7 × 105 cfu/g to 3.6 × 105 cfu/g for Euthynnus affinis and Katswonus pelamis. The MPN value of Total coliform count ranged from 6.5to 20 /g and 11.5 to 15 /g for two fishes respectively. The total Enterobacteriaceae count 0.3 × 105 cfu/g to 1.9 × 105 cfu/g and 0.6 × 105 cfu/g to 1.9 × 105 cfu/g for the two fishes respectively. Differentiation and characterization of various isolates was based on their growth characteristics on specific culture media (biochemical and gram staining reactions). The following human pathogenic bacteria were isolated E. coli, Pseudomonas spp, Salmonella spp, Vibrio spp and Staphylococcus aureus. The microbial load of the fishes in this study may be due to mass pollution of the environments where the fish were caught and also monitoring the bacterial contents present in fish samples.
