Objective: To evaluate the effects of dialysis on pulmonary functions by measuring various pulmonary function parameters using Pulmonary Function Tests pre and post hemodialysis in patients with ESRD. Material and Methods: The study was conducted as an uncontrolled before–after study among 40 patients with ESRD undergoing haemodialysis in a tertiary care teaching hospital in North India. The pulmonary function parameters like FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, DLCO, PIF and P0.1 were measured with comparison to the installed normograms. Statistical Analysis was done using SPSS software. Results: The study included 17 females and 23 males; the mean duration of time since the participant was on dialysis was 841.92±701.4 days. Following heamodialysis, the parameters such as FEV1, FVC, PIF, P0.1 have shown differences, but the change was not statistically significant. However the FEV1% and FVC% has shown statistically significant improvement post dialysis in females. Conclusion: The spirometric parameters such as FEV1, FEV1%, FVC, FVC% improved after hemodialysis. The other parameters such as FEV1:FVC, P0.1, DLCO decreased after hemodialysis and the decrease was not statistically significant.
