Background: CKD is a chronic, progressive condition that significantly impairs the quality of life. Haemodialysis is an expensive treatment modality in patients with ESRD. It imposes limitations and major lifestyle changes. This study aims at determining the quality of life in patients undergoing regular HD and to analyze various factors that influence the QOL. Materials and methods: Ninety–four patients diagnosed as CKD/ESRD as defined by the National Kidney Foundation were asked to answer the KDQOL–36TM questionnaire. The scores are compared with factors influencing the QOL such as age, gender, socioeconomic class and duration of HD. Results: The mean ± SD scores for symptom/problem list was 75.07 ± 68.29, 46.44 ± 23.93 for effects of kidney disease, 30.05 ± 21.01 for burden of kidney disease, 33.62 ± 10.46 for physical composite and 45.86 ± 9.95 for mental composite. The subscales burden of kidney disease, physical and mental composites have higher number of patients scoring less than 50. The subscales effects of kidney disease and physical composite have a significant association with age. All subscales except symptom/problem list showed a significant relation with female gender, with more number of females scoring below 50 in all subscales compared to males. All subscales except symptom/problem list showed a significant relation with lower socioeconomic status. No association was found between the QOL scores and duration of HD. Conclusion: Older age, female gender and lower socioeconomic status are some factors that are associated with a lower QOL. More studies are needed to study various factors that contribute to the QOL in such patients in order to focus health care strategies on these aspects and help ensure a better QOL
