BACKGROUND: Frailty is a progressive physiological decline in multiple organ systems marked by loss of function, loss of physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to disease and death. The hallmark of frailty is its progressive decline marked by loss of function, loss of physiological reserve, increased risk for falls, delayed illness recovery; more frequent and longer stay hospitalization, and mortality. Identification and treatment of frailty is a challenge for clinicians. Targeted physical training increasing endurance and balance can lead to functional independence and increased quality of life. There are only few studies conducted on fitness training among frail individuals in India. Thus, present paper aims on fitness training and its effect on frail individuals. METHODOLOGY: This is a single blinded, randomized control, interventional study design. Thirty frail individual age between 60 to 70(mean=66) year selected for the study. Participants having acute cardiac, neurological disorder, and cognition impairments were excluded. The assessment for frailty was done with Edmonton Frail scale (EFS). Thirty frail were assigned to either intervention group A(n=15) and control group B(n=15) by Simple Random Sampling (lottery) method. The Intervention group performed fitness training for 8 weeks 3 days per week. Fitness training include strength (low intensity),endurance and balance training. Outcome measures included 6 Minute walk test(6MWT),Timed up and test(TUG) and 30 second chair stand test. RESULTS: After 8 weeks of fitness training Intervention group showed significant improvement in 6 minute walk test(p<0.001),Timed up and go test(p<0.001) but no significant change in 30 second chair stand test(p=0.05) and control group outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Fitness training reduces and reverses frailty. It can be concluded from present study that fitness training can be use along with other approaches to reduces frailty and improved balance and endurance in frail individuals.
