Anaemia is a major preventable disease affecting all age groups. This prospective study was conducted in department of laboratory sciences and molecular medicine among 10,000 patients in a tertiary care hospital, out of which 6554(65.54%) were found to be anaemic, however only 1482 (14.82%) individuals met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and formed our study cohort. Based on Haemogram and PBS findings, among 1482 cases, most common was normocytic normochromic anaemia 69% (n=1023) followed by microcytic hypochromic anaemia 28.1% (n=416), macrocytic anaemia 2.8% (n=42) and the least was dimorphic anaemia 0.1% (n=1). Out of 416 cases of microcytic hypochromic anaemia, there were 350 cases of iron deficiency anaemia followed by 56 cases of thalassemia and 10 cases required workup for other causes. It is recommended by AAP and WHO for the screening of all children <1yr of age for anaemia, and based on our study findings, we propose that anemia screening in children should be linked to immunization scheduled at all ages, at nine months of age with MMR vaccine, One and half year of age with DPT, At 5yrs of age with Booster DPT and at 15yrs of age with TT along with appropriate counseling if thalassemia is detected. In addition to this, while giving Vitamin A supplements, children should also be given Iron, B12 and folate therapy and advised deworming at 06 monthly regular intervals till the age of 05 yrs and subsequently on a yearly basis.
