Background: It is obvious that patient with orthopedic illness has the highest prevalence of anxiety and depression. They are very important for cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety and depression, but they have never been systemically examine in Indian population. Material and Methods: Patient with anxiety and depression who were willing to undergo CBT were included in this study after obtaining informed consent. A Quasi experimental research design (non–equivalent control group pre–test –post–test only design) was adopted. A total of 15 orthopedic patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in experimental and comparison group by using purposive sampling technique. Anxiety Manifest Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory were used to collect data through interview technique. CBT sessions were given for the experimental group for continuous seven days and comparison group received conventional care. Statistical Analysis: It was done with the help of SPSS v 16 Descriptive and inferential statistics was calculated. Characteristics similarities between the groups were tested with Chi–square analysis and dependent variables were compared using t–test. Results: This study included a total of 30 subjects, out of which 15 were in experimental group and 15 were in comparison group. Mean pre–test anxiety score of experimental group was 19.6 and in comparison group was 17.40. There was a significant drop in the post test mean anxiety score in experimental group to 12.33, whereas this was 18.33 in comparison group. The computed‘t’ value 4.20 was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance (p=.000). Similarly, there was a noteworthy decline in the depression score from 22.26 to 13.13 between pre–intervention and post–intervention. The‘t’ value 4.05 was found significant (p=.000). The study concluded that CBT has significant effect on reducing the anxiety and depressive symptoms among Orthopaedic patients. Conclusion: CBT had significant impact on anxiety and depression level of orthopedic patients .Orthopedic patients, who were exposed to CBT (experimental group),had statistically significant higher mean anxiety and depression score than orthopedic patients who did not exposed to CBT (comparison group)
