INTRODUCTION: There are several mouth rinses being marketed which have both advantages and disadvantages. As there are several systems of medicines available in India people are in dilemma about which system to follow. The aim of this study is to compare the antiplaque efficacy of Homeopathic, Ayurveda and Allopathic mouth rinses. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A double blinded parallel experimental study was conducted among 45 participants in the age group of 20 to 30 years for a period of 30 days. The mouthwash samples were previously labelled and distributed to 3 randomly partied groups with 15 subjects in each group. Group A(Freshol), Group B(Hi ora regular), Group C(Colgate Plax) mouthwashes were given. Turskey et al modification of Quigley–Hein Plaque Index and Loe and Sillness Gingival Index were employed to record the baseline, 15th day and 30th day plaque and gingival scores respectively. RESULTS: The PI and GI scores were analysed using ANOVA test. The mean differences in PI and GI scores among the 3 groups were not statistically significant but clinically significant reduction in the plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation by all three mouthwashes was evident. CONCLUSION: This study proves both Ayurveda and Homeopathic mouthwashes are as effective as allopathic mouthwashes. Thus, these mouthwashes can be used in regular oral hygiene practise.
