Balanced nutritional intake is required for adequate biological functioning, and any deficit or excess could lead to alterations in the cognitive processes related to the learning of reading and writing. Undernourished children have been shown to have decreased attendance, attention, and academic performance as well as experience more health problems compared to well–nourished children . This study investigated the nutritional status and its effect on the academic performance of students in a government school of rural Meerut. Methodology: A Cross sectional study conducted in a Government Inter College in the rural area of Meerut. Sample size taken was 197 adolescents(10–19 years), by taking prevalence of malnutrition as 32.8% . Students were selected from each class and were interviewed using predesigned pretested questionnaire supplemented with anthropometric examination and BMI estimation. Results: Out of total 197 students who participated,57.9% adolescents were under weight and 65.5% of the students were academically weak. 89.5% of the underweight students had got poor scholastic performance as compared to 24.7% of normal weight adolescents(P<0.001).61.7% of the males and 53.4% of the females were found to be underweight. Conclusion: The nutrition have significant impact on the academic performance of students. In spite of all the nutritional programs running in government schools, there is a need to supervise their implementation properly and strictly in all the school.
