Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of length of edentulism on the mandibular alveolar ridge resorption. Materials and Methods: The study was done on edentulous men to eliminate the influence associated with osteoporosis and menopause in women. 20 completely edentulous subjects with age between 60–70 years have been included in the study. The patients were selected from the Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridges, Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar, J&K. Two resorptive age groups were formed based on the length of edentulism. A standardized panoramic radiograph was made for all patients after obtaining their informed consent and measurement of the amount of resorption was calculated using the Wical and Swoope method. Statistical analysis was done using MannWhiteney analysis. Results: The results indicated that the differences were statistically insignificant (p value > 0.05) between the length of edentulism and the residual ridge resorption. However, an increase in the rate of residual ridge resorption was found with increase in the age of the subjects. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that with an increase in age, resorption of the ridge increases.
