Background: Ocular injuries are a major cause of preventable blindness in the world. They occur more commonly in children and young adults. Penetrating injuries caused by sharp objects or foreign bodies. Objective: To determine the clinical profile and visual outcome of patients admitted with penetrating ocular trauma. Method: Penetrating ocular trauma was classified according to the Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology system. Demographic data and final best–corrected (Snellen’s) visual acuity were recorded. Results: A total of 63 patients (63 eyes) with penetrating ocular injuries were examined. Most common aetiological agent was machine and sharp instruments in industrial workers. Corneal penetration with Iris prolapse was common pattern of injury. 61.8% of patients got visual acuity better than 6/60 following 4 weeks of treatment. Conclusion: Penetrating injuries caused by sharp instruments are potentially serious and should be treated as an ocular emergency.
