Aim: To assess variation in circulatory concentrations of cytokines such as Tumour necrosis factor α (TNF–α) and interleukin –10 (IL–10) in women with pre–eclampsia. Methods: A hospital based observational study was conducted on 140 patients of αpreeclampsia and normal healthy pregnant women. Serum AST, serum ALT, serum uric acid and urine protein were estimated by spectrophotometry and TNF–α and interleukin –10 were estimated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The mean serum levels of TNF– alpha and Interleukin –10 in pre–eclamptic women were 41.02 ± 11.33 pg/ml and 2.1 ± 0.72 pg/ml while in normal healthy pregnant women these were 15.37 ± 8.42 pg/ml and 4.32 ± 0.98 pg/ml respectively. These values were found to be statistically highly significant. (p<0.0001). Conclusion: In this study, the level of TNF –α was increased whereas level of interleukin –10 was decreased in women with pre– eclampsia in comparison with normal healthy pregnant women.
