Effect of ZrO2 on the reaction sintering of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system in the Cordierite composition

Abstract :

 Present investigation was undertaken to synthesis and characterize pure cordierite and cordierite-Zr O2 composite by solgel technique form dehydroxylated kaolinite, precipitated silica and Mg(NO3 ) 2 in presence of Zr O2 . The gels are dried and sintered at different temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1350C. Magnitude of sintering was determine by measuring some fired characteristics including shrinkage, apparent porosity and true density. The evolution of crystalline phases and the microstructures have been studied using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that the mechanical properties and the microstructure were critically dependent on the Zr O2 content and the retained porosity
