Fasting samples of 585 apparently healthy, middle and upper middle class Gujarati population of Anand district were tested for total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C). The values obtained were (median and range in mg/dl) 176.69(105- 248), 97.2(39-238), 43.61(24-63), 110.64(50-171) and 19.8(7-52) respectively for males and 178.79(110-247), 89.8(37-216), 53.68(31-77), 105.21(51-160) and 18 (8-44) respectively for females. When these subjects were grouped according to the age, all parameters except HDL-C showed statistically significant (P<0.005) increase with age advancement. Triglyceride, VLDL-C and LDL-C were high in men up to 60 years age and total cholesterol was high in men up to 50 years age when compared with women of similar age. HDL-C was higher in women than men for all age groups.
