Diagnostic Laparoscopy - A pioneering investigation in the evolution of infertility

Abstract :

Background and Objective: Use of diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy in infertility has been the focus of attention in recent years and is demonstrated to be an effective method in evaluating these cases. Main objective of the study was to detect diagnostic efficacy of laparoscopy in uterine, pelvic and ovarian pathologies. Material and method: This prospective study included 100 women comprising of cases of primary and secondary infertility. The study was conducted from 1st June 2018 to 30th June 2019 in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur. After proper history taking, thorough gynecological examination and with all necessary investigations women were subjected to surgery. Results: Among 100 women, 70 had primary infertility and 30 women had secondary infertility. Of these 100 women, 28% had absolutely normal laparoscopic findings while ovarian pathology contributed the most (34%), followed by tubal (16%), pelvic (12%) and uterine (10%) pathologies. Conclusion: Laparoscopy is safe and cost effective method. It should be considered as a prime diagnostic tool for evaluating the etiology of infertility in women and for effective treatment decisions.
