Abstract :

Background: Our aim was to characterise perianal fistulas in detail using 3.0 Tesla MR imaging. Material and methodology: Descriptive study was undertaken for patients who were referred for MRI perianal Fistulogram, over a period of six months. MRI was performed using a 3.0 Tesla MRI and characterisation of fistula, external openings, sphincteric extension, and associated complications were observed. Results: Among 64 cases, 81% were male and 75% were 20 to 39 yrs of age. Intersphincteric fistulas were seen in 53% of the cases, while extrasphincteric and transsphincteric tracks were seen in 17.2% and 14% respectively. Most cases showed multiple tracks in the form of side–anches, forming 40% of the cases (n=26), while only 36% had a single fistulous track. Conclusion: 3.0 Tesla MR imaging is emerging as an imaging technique with superior and accurate preoperative evaluation of perianal fistulas.
