Influence of the neighborhood on the alcohol consumption in youth of rural and urban zone

Abstract :

 

Introduction: alcohol consumption is a social problem that demands the attention of health systems, the young’s is a population considered vulnerable and a variable of importance is the neighborhood where they reside. Objective: to identify the influence that the neighborhood has on the alcohol consumption in young people of rural and urban zone of Mexico. Method: the design of the study was descriptive correlational, comparative, the sample of 302 young people (133 from the rural zone and 169 from the urban zone), to get up the data, two instruments were used: the AUDIT and the scale for the evaluation of neighborhood. Results:  it was identified that young people from rural zone show a higher harmful consumption of alcohol (55.2%), young people from urban zone have a higher sensible consumption of alcohol (44.5%). It was shown the relation with the characteristics of the neighborhood and the alcohol consumption (rs = –.124, p = .040). Conclusion: it is important to carry out more research that allows the design of better strategies to serve the rural and urban population and prevent the consumption of alcohol by young people.
