LITERARY REVIEW OF VISHA DRAYA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO RASATARANGINI

Abstract :

Rasashastra forms the basic ayurvedic pharmaceutics. Rasatarangini is an authoritative text on Rasashashtra and contains all the details of various procedures involved in drug preparation. It is considered to be the last classical text pertaining to Rasashashtra written in modern era. Generally, Visha dravya are considered as harmful but when used in small amount then it acts like ‘Amruta‘. These preparations are also very effective and fast acting than the other preparations. Present paper will highlight various poisonous drugs described in Rasatarangini, which has classified Visha under two main categories i.e, Sthavara and Jangama. Sthavara is further classified into Khanij e.g. Parada and Vanaspatik. Vanaspatik is again classified into Visha (09) e.g. Vastanabha and Upavisha (11) e.g. Arkakshira, along with their adverse effects, purification methods, preparations, medicinal uses.
