Abstract :

Objectives: The main aim of this study was to analyze the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions.

Subjects and methods:The biopsies of localized reactive hyperplastic lesions (LRHL) of the gingiva stored in the department’s database in preceding year (2016–17) were analyzed according to age, gender and location of the lesion. The resultant findings were compared with other studies published on this matter.

Results: A total of 60 reactive lesions were accessed. Focal fious hyperplasia (FFH) being  the most common 25 cases(41.7%), followed by pyogenic granuloma (PG) 19 cases(31.7 %), peripheral ossifying fioma (POF) 10 cases(16.7%) and peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) 6 cases(10%). The mean age of the patients was 32 years, with a range varying from 8 to 79 years. The LRHL was more common in females except focal fious hyperplasia, which showed male predilection. PG and POF were more common in the maxilla and FFH as well as PGCG were more common in the mandible.

Conclusion: This study indicates some differences in age and gender distribution as well as in location between the different lesions. These results could be because of the smaller sample size or represent the geographic variation or changing trend among these lesions because of multiple factors like diet ,aetiology ,etc . Further large scale multicentre studies need to be done .
