25 Hydroxy Vitamin D in Migraine: Is there an Association?
Dr Nishant Sinha, Dr Sunanda Jha, Dr Anupa Prasad
Abstract :
Migraine affects patients of almost all ages with the highest burden on those between 25 and 55 years. These are the most productive years of life. Lower vitamin D levels have been associated with higher frequency of migraine and other types of headache. In the present study we set out to find an association between serum levels of vitamin D and migraine. 131 patients were recruited in the test group who were diagnosed clinically as migraine in Medicine or pediatric outpatient department according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders diagnostic criteria for migraine. The control group consisted of age and sex matched 30 subjects who accompanied the patients and were apparently healthy. Estimation of serum levels of 25(OH) D3 was done by enhanced chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) technique. Low serum 25 (OH) vitamin D levels are reflective of the patients with migraine. The chronicity of migraine has a weak association with vitamin D deficiency.
