Abstract :

Introduction: Surgical–site infection (SSI) represents a major source of morbidity and mortality among surgical patients with skin as a major source of infection. Povidone–iodine (Betadine) is an antiseptic solution which is bactericidal against a large array of pathogens and used for skin preparation since 1955. Materials and Methods: Data collected from 70 patients undergoing clean and potentially contaminated operations.Skin prepared with 5% Povidone–iodine. All age groups undergoing open–access elective procedures without infection at the operative site were included. All the patients were assessed for surgical site infection post–operatively. Culture & antibiotic sensitivity was done. Results: 2 out of 70 patients had surgical site infection. Culture and antibiotic sensitivity was negative. Conclusion: For cutaneous antisepsis, only 5 % Povidone–iodine is best in terms of efficacy, cost or side–effects.
