Abstract :

Aims: To compare the safety and efficacy of teneligliptin with glimepiride as an add–on therapy to metformin in patients of type–2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A comparative randomized open–label trial was conducted on 80 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, randomly allocated in two groups. Group A patients were put on Metformin 500 mg + teneligliptin 20 mg once daily and Group B patients were put on Metformin 500 + Glimepiride 2 mg once daily. Results: Both treatment groups, produced clinically significant reduction in HbA1c, FBG and 2H–PPBG levels (P < 0.05) from baseline but the metformin–glimepiride provided better glycemic control as compared to the Metformin–teneligliptin combination throughout the study period of 16 weeks. Conclusion: Teneligliptin, a DDP–4 inhibitor is as efficacious as glimepiride in reducing HbA1C and fasting blood sugar. It also causes lower risks of hypoglycemia and weight gain and is well tolerated.
