Abstract :

Patellar fractures have a huge importance because of the dependence of the knee extensor mechanism on it. Displaced fractures are most commonly treated with tension band wiring principle. A prospective study of 30 patients was done over 1 year to study the outcome following treatment of displaced transverse patellar fractures with tension band wiring. The mean age was 45.8 years with a male preponderance. All the fractures united at an average 13.6 weeks. We had 5 complications including pin migration, flexion limitation, extensor lag and infection. However, the results as per WEST criteria were excellent in 26 (86.7%), good in 3(10.0%) and poor in 1 (3.3%) cases. Hence TBW can be recommended for such fractures for decent results with minimal complications
