A study of biofilm as a virulence marker in Candida species in various clinical samples and correlation with Antifungal susceptibility testing at SMS Medical College and Hospital, Jaipur

Abstract :

Candida is one of the most frequently encountered opportunistic fungi that can cause severe infection in humans.The ability of Candida speceis to form biofilms on various surfaces is an important factor in its pathogenesis. One of the main characteristics of biofilms is their resistant to oad spectrum anti fungal agents. This Study was conducted at SMS Medical College, Jaipur, from Jan 2019 to Dec–2019. A total of 196 Candida spp. were isolated from various clinical specimens. Speciation of Candida was done by standard yeast identification protocol and Candida CHROMagar. Biofilm formation was detected by Congo Red Agar, Tube method and microtitre plate method. biofilm production was seen in 106/196 (54%) isolates. While compå all the three methods microtitre plate method proved more reliable. The antifungal susceptibility results showed highest resistance to Fluconazole and voriconazole, but Amp–B(91.3%) showed good efficacy, and no resistance was observed for Caspofungin.
