A STUDY ON PAP SMEAR IN PREGNANCY

Abstract :

Background: Carcinoma cervix is the most common genital malignancy in women. Pap smear is a screening test to detect early pre–invasive lesions of cervix. Pregnancy is an opportunity to perform the screening test. Methods: One hundred pregnant women attending antenatal clinic irrespective of their gestational age were screened by Pap smear. This was a cross–sectional study. Pap smear reports were classified according to the Bethesda system and results analysed. Results: No abnormal pap smears were detected in the study. Inflammatory smear was reported in 14%. The common infection found was candida infection. Inflammatory smear had significant association with the duration of married life. Conclusion: Whenever women seek medical care, the opportunity should be utilised for creating awareness and screening of cancer cervix. Pap smear can be done in women who attend antenatal clinics.
