Abstract :
Adaptive filtering is the method of choice to remove motion artefacts in the bioelectric signals. This technique adaptively removes the embedded noise, in relation to correlated noise fed to the reference input of the filter. To generate reference noise, accelerometer is attached to electrode/sensor, which becomes cumbersome for the user. This paper introduces a method of suppressing motion artefacts in electrocardiography signal using Adaptive Line Enhancement which does not require reference noise and obviates need of extra noise sensor. In this method the original signal is directly fed to the signal input of the adaptive filter and same is delayed and fed to the reference input. The quantum of delay is optimized to remove the motion artefact embedded in the signal; observed to be 0.3 seconds in the present case. Thirty–five ECG data files with superimposed artefact have been subjected to adaptive filtering as well as adaptive line enhancement with root mean square error of 25.95±20.12 and 31.00±16.27, input–output correlation of 0.87±0.11 and 0.78±0.16 and signal to noise ratio of 6.15±6.43 and 1.59±5.16 respectively. These observations suggest adaptive line enhancement as an alternative to adaptive noise cancellation in situations where recording of reference noise is not practically feasible.
