Alopecia areata and clinical pattern of the disease

Abstract :

Introduction: Alopecia areata refers to a common condition in which patchy loss of hairs occurs without any atrophy of the affected skin. Diagnosis is based mainly on clinical appearance circumscribed circular or oval patches of nonscarring alopecia without any scaling, inflammation or pigmentation with presence of characteristic exclamation mark hairs and positive coudability sign. Aims and objective: To study the clinical pattern of alopecia areata. Materials and method: A complete clinical examination of patients was performed in good day light with stress upon morphology of each lesion, eye and nail changes, associated dermatological conditions and other diseases. A few hairs from the margin of alopecia areata lesion were plucked randomly and examined under the low power of light microscope. Result: Maximum number of patients 18 (36.0%) had hair loss of 0–6 month duration. Maximum number of patients having hair loss on scalp (56.0%) followed by patients having hair loss on ead (28.0%). Maximum number of patients had associated nail changes (30.0%). Conclusion: Majority of patients are male, with age group 11 to 30 years. The common site of alopecia areata is scalp. Nail changes was common condition in patients
