An open label pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of a proprietary krill oil formulation in the relief of troublesome symptoms of the menopause

Michael P Wakeman

Abstract :

The effectiveness of a proprietary formulation in relieving the most troublesome symptoms of the menopause was assessed in an open label pilot study over 4 months. The supplement providing thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, vitamin D, soy isoflavones, rosemary extract and krill oil was taken each day for the 3 months of the active phase of the trial. After the first month of treatment, compared to baseline, highly statistically significant effects were reported by 50 women who completed the study regarding hot flush intensity; hot flush frequency; difficulty sleeping; mood symptoms; feeling down; lack of drive; verge of tears; mood swings; anxiety; irritation; lack of sex drive; dryness of the vagina and increased need to urinate. These improvements increased in a highly statistically significant manner during the next 30 days and remained at this elevated level through to the trial end. A further larger placebo controlled trial is proposed.
