Abstract :

In India each case required a mean of 4.4 visits for PEP, at a cost of at least $50 and a loss of 2.2 days of work. The aim was to estimate the resources of hospital and man days wasted of patients because of defaulting the vaccination. It was a retrospective study conducted at tertiary centre, data of one year regarding vaccine route and doses received, type of syringes used etc. of 587 dropouts recorded. Mean 2.25 hospital visits, 1.1 work/school days of dropouts and 10 weeks work of ARV OPD staff wasted due defaulting the process. The average expenditure done to vaccinate one dropout patient was `1,453 (US$ 21.41). India is spending more than 10 Million US$ on Anti Rabies vaccination dropouts which is almost 1/10th cost of Anti Rabies Vaccination. Being lower middle income country and endemic for Rabies any wasteful resources is a relatively a serious concern.
