Abstract :

Introduction: Deep neck space abscess is an infection, usually bacterial, within the neck, deep to the superficial layer of the cervical fascia. The objective of this study was to isolate microorganisms from the site of deep neck space abscesses and study antibiotic sensitivity of isolates to commonly used antibiotics. Materials and methods: Fifty patients with deep neck space abscesses and who has to be treated with incision and drainage in the department of otorhino–laryngology, Medical College, Goa, over a period of two years (2014–2016) was included in the study. The pus was obtained either by incision and drainage or by needle aspiration for culture. The pus from abscess was collected in two separate containers, one for routine pus culture and sensitivity and other sample was transferred to thioglycolate medium for anaerobes; these samples were sent to department of microbiology, Medical College, Goa. The reports were processed in microbiology department to detect the antibiotic sensitivity of various organisms and the data was used to analyze specific sensitivities of organisms to antibiotics in Medical College, Goa. Results: Out of 50 cases, pathogens were isolated in 40 cases and 10 cases yielded negative culture. The most common isolate in our study was enterococcus in 15 cases (37.5%), followed by staphylococcus aureus in 13 cases (32.8%), sensitivity was highest for vancomycin, and linezolid in cases of enterococci infection (81%) and linezolid in cases of staphylococcus aureus (100%). Enterococcal isolates were least sensitive to piperacillin tazobactam combination while staphylococcus aureus was least sensitive to trimethoprim sulphamethoxazole combination.
