Abstract :

Background: – This study analyzes the epidemiological data of poisonings and outcomes of various poisonings according to severity of the patient’s condition using Poisoning Severity Score at admission. Aim & Objectives:– • To assess the utility of poisoning severity score in predicting severity and clinical outcomes. Methods: – Prospective observational study carried out in JSS Hospital in Mysuru city for a year. Results:–Among 549 cases, majority of the cases belonged to the 20–29 age group. Most common type of poison was pesticides (63.75%) of which organophosphorus poisoning was the most common and 63% were from rural setting and 31% were farmers by occupation. Subjects who had a PSS Grade of 3 at admission had highest mortality rate of 34.73%. Conclusion: – Poisoning Severity Score (PSS) was found to be helpful in predicting the out–come of the poisoning. Hence the use of PSS Grading should be recommended in all cases of poisonings
