CLINICO–PATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF SPLENIC ABSCESS

Dr. Manjunath. T

Abstract :

A splenic abscess is an uncommon but life–threatening condition with an incidence of occurrence ranging from 0.1% to 0.7% in various series . Patients with splenic abscesses have concomitant risk factors such as diabetes mellitus or immunocompromised conditions like AIDS or tuberculosis. The purpose of this study is to review our experience and analyse the efficacy of these treatment modalities of splenic abscesses, in our setting. This study suggests that antibiotic treatment is a safe and effective alternative to surgery, especially in multiple small abscesses which responds to antibiotics, allowing preservation of the spleen. It should be considered the first line of treatment, although splenectomy remains the final definitive procedure.
