Abstract :

Background Among the regional blocks, the Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block is an approach that has proven to be effective in reducing acute post–operative pain and the complications of opiates use such as nausea, vomiting & respiratory depression. Aim of the study was comparative evaluation of 0.25% Bupivacaine and 0.25% Ropivacaine in Transversus Abdominis Plane block for postoperative analgesia after inguinal hernia surgery Materials & method Ninety patients of ASA status I or II undergoing inguinal hernia surgery under subarachnoid block were divided into three groups, group A (n=30) receiving PNS guided TAP block with 20 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine , group B receiving PNS guided TAP block with 20ml of 0.25% ropivacaine and group C (n=30) receiving PNS guided TAP block with 20ml of normal saline for postoperative analgesia. Each patient was assessed postoperatively in the postanesthesia care unit at 30 mins,2,4,6,12, and 24 hr postoperatively for pain and the need for rescue analgesic was evaluated. Results Both 0.25% bupivacaine and 0.25% ropivacaine provide effective post–operative analgesia as compared to 6 hrs in control group. Difference in the duration of analgesia in bupicavaine and Ropivacaine group is clinically and statistically insignificant. Conclusion TAP block with bupivacaine & ropivacaine provide effective post–operative analgesia.
