COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF EFFECT OF 17% ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID AND CHITOSAN ON FRACTURE RESISTANCE OF ENDODONTICALLY TREATED TEETH: AN IN VITRO STUDY.

Abstract :

Effect of solutions of 0.2% Chitosan [Chitoirrigant ] and 17% EDTA on microhardness of root dentin was evaluated comparatively in this study. 50 sound human single canaled teeth were selected and decoronated at the CEJ. Cleaning and shaping of root canals was done using ProTaper instruments till F2. 2 ml of 1% NaOCl was used as an intracanal irrigant between uses of each succeeding file. Canals were finally rinsed with saline to remove any dentin deis remained in canal after instrumentation. Teeth were randomly assigned into 5 groups, Group 1 the samples were irrigated with saline. Group 2,the samples were irrigated with 17% EDTA for 1min followed by 10 ml of 1% NaOCl for 1 min. In Group 3, the samples were irrigated with 17% EDTA for 3min followed by 10 ml of 1% NaOCl for 3 min.In Group 4, the samples were irrigated with 0.2% Chitosan for 1min followed by 10 ml of 1% NaOCl for 1 min. In Group 5, the samples were irrigated with 10 ml of 0.2 % Chitosan for 3min followed by 10 ml of 1% NaOCl for 3 min. After the use of irrigants roots were obturated with Gutta–percha points, and AH Plus (Dentsply) root canal sealer was used in the single–cone technique. All the teeth roots were set into rapid polymerization acrylic resin and the resin block was fitted to the universal testing machine to check the fracture resistance of each tooth. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to find significance of study parameters between the groups. Post Hoc analysis was carried out along with ANOVA test. Fracture resistance test showed that the EDTA had detrimental effect on dentin. In conclusion it can be said that Chitosan has lesser detrimental effects on root canal dentin when compared to 17% EDTA.
